Module 8 Video Reviews
1. I chose the video Florence: Heart of the Renaissance because I have learned about the Renaissance in the past and wanted to broaden my knowledge on the topic, especially related to art.
Florence: Heart of the Renaissance
2. - The Renaissance began in 1400 in Florence
- Renaissance art was successful in portraying humanism, beautiful people in “harmonious surroundings” they expressed “confidence”
- Man begins to stand on its own and moves out of the church
- People are sculpted nude, this celebrates the human body more and more.
- The Duomo is the largest Italian Cathedral finished in the 15th century.
- Donatello invented the Renaissance style of art, Michelangelo would come next and perfect what he started.
- Michelangelo sculpted Jesus larger than life, the point of the statue is to reveal that Jesus is dead, he is successful in portraying this.
3. The reading and the video both explained the origin of the Renaissance being in Florence. The importance of humanism in the Renaissance is highlighted in the reading as well, their democratic way of life allowed for people to feel like individuals. Religion is a strong reason for a lot of the art created, they used religious figures in a lot of the art in the Renaissance period.
4. The video added a lot to the module, it helped break down the Renaissance visually and was educational in doing so.
1. The next video I chose was titled Art and Life in the Middle Ages: The Luttrell Psalter, this video’s title seemed intriguing because I didn’t know what the “Luttrell Psalter” was prior to watching.

2.
- A psalter is a prayer book containing the words of Psalms in Latin.
- The Psalter was created by a scribe working with a quill on vellum, parchment made from sheepskin, the pictures in the Psalter were enriched in gold and silver, many artists worked on it.
- A lot of the illustration seems to be done by one person, this person is called the Luttrell Master, the work is detailed and expressionistic.
- If you look closely at the pictures in the Psalter, you can learn a lot about the Luttrell family, this revealed how people in England lived in the Middle Ages
- The Psalter contained many scenes of games and revels which might be related to bringing in the harvest and or other festivals in the calendar.
- Monsters in the Middle Ages were known as babuins or baboons, the artists, in order to create these monsters, let their imagination run wild creating nightmarish outcomes.
3. In the readings, “The Medieval and Byzantine Eras” the middle ages are classified as “a period of intellectual darkness due to the loss of classical learning, which he saw as light”. A rebirth of classical learning was introduced with the Middle Ages, art was a great equalizer in the dark of the time.
4. I thought the video went very in-depth into the art of the Middle Ages, specifically in the Psalter, this video was the perfect length as well.
